Localities, ministries gear up for coming super typhoon
Localities from northern Quang Ninh to southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces and the ministries of Defence, Transport, Agriculture and Rural Development, and Foreign Affairs have been asked to promptly take actions in anticipation of super typhoon Hagupit, which is likely to hit the East Sea in the next several days.
The Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control and the National Committee for Search and Rescue on December 5 asked the localities and ministries to closely follow the typhoon’s developments and notify vessels operating on the East Sea about the storm.
They were also required to devise plans preparing for the typhoon and evacuating coastal communities, get search and rescue forces and vehicles ready, and regularly report the pace of preparations to the committees’ offices.
At 1pm on December 5, Hagupit’s centre was at 11.9 degrees north latitude and 129 degrees east longitude, about 400km east of the Philippines ’ Samar island, said the Central Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Centre, adding that it packed winds of up to 184-201km per hour.
In the next 24 hours, the typhoon is forecast to mainly move west at a speed of 10-15km per hour. At 1pm on December 6, its centre will be about 120km east of Samar with wind speeds from 167-201km per hour.
At 1pm on December 7, Hagupit’s centre is projected to be at 12.2 degrees north and 123.4 degrees east in the central region of the Philippines with winds up to 150-166km per hour, the forecasting body added.
Once entering the East Sea , Hagupit will be the fifth storm to hit the waters this year.
