The Ministry of Health needs to work together with relevant agencies to halt the spread of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) among children, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has said.

The Health Ministry has urged local authorities to keep a close watch on the spread of the disease, saying all cases, especially among children, need to be identified and treated as soon as possible.

Local officials should make regular reports on the disease, so that the ministry could keep the PM fully informed.

Over the last four months, HFMD has struck 3,000 children nationwide, of which 10 died. Around 10-25 percent of cases were infected with the EV71 virus, said Head of the Preventive Health and Environment Department under the Ministry of Health Nguyen Huy Nga.

The disease has already ripped through China, infecting thousands of people and killing 28 children. 66 cases have been reported in Da Nang, Khanh Hoa and Binh Thuan, central and south central Vietnam and HFMD is likely to spread to southern provinces such as Kien Giang, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Ben Tre and Dong Nai.

HFMD is a common illness among infants and children. It is characterized by fever, sores in the mouth, and a rash with blisters. HFMD begins with a mild fever, poor appetite, malaise (“feeling sick”), and frequently a sore thoat.
