The Vietnamese Ministry of Defence on January 6 inaugurated and handed over a five-storey building complex to its Laotian counterpart at the Kaysone Phomvihane Defence Academy in Laos.

It is equipped with state-of-the-art technical facilities and comprises lecture halls and offices for teachers at the academy, covering 5,400m2. Construction got started in April 2008 at a cost of VND64 billion.

Addressing the ceremony, both the Vietnamese and Lao ministers of defence highlighted the traditional ties between the two Parties, States and armies. They said the complex - a gift from the Vietnamese Ministry of Defence - demonstrated the comradeship and mutual assistance between the two defence ministries.

Leaders of the Lao defence ministry and the Kaysone Phomvihane Defence Academy pledged to effectively use the buildings for the training of their military cadres.

In the past, many Vietnamese volunteer soldiers fought side by side with the Lao People’s Army and many of them laid down their lives for Laos’ liberation and independence.

Also on January 6, Vietnamese Defence Minister Phung Quang Thanh and his entourage met with Lao President Choumaly Phomvihane at the headquarters of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.
