Vietnam hails Iraq’s further achievements in the socio-political and economic fields as well as the significant improvement in its relations with neighboring countries and in international reintegration.

Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Ambassador Bui The Giang made the statement at a UNSC consultation session on the missing and property losses during the 1990-1991 Iraq-Kuwait war.

The Vietnamese diplomat voiced his support for the UN’s review of its Resolutions on Iraq since 1990.
Sharing huge losses of concerned parties,  Ambassador Giang acknowledged Iraq’s efforts and cooperation in the Iraq-Kuwait relations, considering these as important premises for the two countries to resolve outstanding issues on the basis of respect for each other’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and in the legitimate interests of all parties concerned.

He said he hopes Iraq, Kuwait, the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), the Tripartite Commission and the International Committee of Red Cross will settle current issues, thus contributing to nurturing an environment conducive to mutual reconciliation, stability and prosperity in the region.

Regarding the operation of the Development Fund for Iraq (DFI) and the International Advisory and Monitoring Board for Iraq (IAMB), Ambassador Giang emphasised the need for the DFI to ensure stronger governance and for Iraq authorities’ self-reliant role to make practical contributions to national reconstruction.

“It is also imperative for the IAMB to scale up its audit and oversight capacity to ensure that all resources from the DFI are efficiently, effectively and transparently utilised in the best interests of Iraq and its people,” Mr Giang stressed.

“In this connection, we believe that the international community’s continued assistance for Iraq is important in the latter’s efforts for national reconstruction and development, and regional and international integration,” the Vietnamese diplomat concluded.
