The Vietnamese embassy in Switzerland held a get-together to celebrate the Lunar New Year festival (Tet) in Bern on January 28.

Present the event were embassy staff, representatives from the Vietnamese Association in Switzerland, the Switzerland-Vietnam Friendship Association and overseas Vietnamese in the country.

Ambassador Hoang Van Nha briefed participants on Vietnam’s socio-economic situation in 2011. He emphasized that although the country faces challenges, the Vietnamese Party, Government and people have made great efforts to curb inflation, stabilize the macro-economy, and ensure social security.

The ambassador also stressed the fine development of Vietnam-Switzerland relations, with diverse activities organized last year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. Switzerland has emerged as the fifth largest investor in Vietnam, the diplomat noted.

Mr Nha also highlighted the active contribution by overseas Vietnamese to maintaining national identity and wished them good health, prosperity and happiness in the Lunar New Year.

Moser Ngoc Dung from the Vietnamese Association in Switzerland pledged to strengthen the association’s activities in the future to further unite and build up the overseas Vietnamese community which has served as a bridge to contribute to the homeland.

The President of the Vietnam-Switzerland Friendship Association, Anjuska Weil, reviewed its activities over the past time, especially the struggle for AO/dioxin victims. She said that in mid-February, she will lead a delegation to Vietnam to carry out a credit project for the elderly in Hue City in order to help improve their living conditions.
