Delegates from the militaries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries and China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (RoK) met in Shijiazhuang, China on June 4, to attend a five-day workshop on natural disaster response work for their armed forces.

The workshop, held in the capital of China's Hebei province, will focus on the role and methods of deployment for armed forces in relation to international disaster relief work, according to the Chinese Defence Ministry.

Zhang Bangdong, director of the Chinese Defence Ministry’s foreign affairs office, said that strengthening international disaster relief cooperation is in the interests of all countries in the region.

The workshop, the first of its kind, was proposed by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao at the 10th ASEAN plus three - China, Japan and the RoK - (ASEAN+3) summit in the Philippine in January 2007.

All together 28 officials from ASEAN member countries, China, Japan, the RoK and the ASEAN secretariat attended the workshop.
