Hanoi’s 2012 foreign arrivals hit a record high

(VOV) - Hanoi’s municipal Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has announced the capital city welcomed 2.1 million foreign arrivals in 2012—up 11.3 percent compared to 2011.

This is the first time Hanoi’s foreign tourist arrivals have exceeded 2 million, accounting for one third of Vietnam’s total number of international visitors last year.

Despite the ongoing economic downturn, the city still enjoyed high tourist numbers thanks to improvements in marketing strategies and tourism investment.

A number of Hanoi’s key tourism markets saw considerable increases, including China (208,000 arrivals, up 27 percent on 2011), Australia (130,500 arrivals, up 20 percent), Japan (152,500 arrivals, up 32 percent), and the Republic of Korea (81,000 arrivals, up 53 percent).

Hanoi also welcomed 12.3 million domestic visitors, a year-on-year increase of 5.5 percent.
