A meeting was held in Hanoi on May 18 to mark the 116th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890 - May 19, 2006) and the 40th anniversary of Uncle Ho’s visit to a training course for new party members (May 14, 1996-May 14, 2006).

Addressing the meeting, Party Politburo member Nguyen Phu Trong said the date of May 19 has become an event of great significance to Vietnamese people and international friends for many decades. He emphasised that Ho Chi Minh’s Thought is a system of comprehensive and deep viewpoints on the fundamental issues of the Vietnamese revolution. Such are the results of creatively applying the theory of Marxism-Leninism in Vietnam’s concrete conditions, inheriting and developing Vietnam’s fine traditional values and absorbing the cultural quintessence of humankind.

Present at the meeting were Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, former Party General Secretaries Do Muoi and Le Kha Phieu, State President Tran Duc Luong, Deputy Prime Miniser Nguyen Tan Dzung, General Vo Nguyen Giap, revolutionary veterans, representatives from different government agencies and branches and high-ranking army officers.
