Japan’s biggest steel group, Nippon Steel, is to build a steel mill in southern Vietnam.

This will be Nippon Steel’s first plant overseas.

In mid June, Nippon Steel, along with the Vietnam Steel Corporation (VSC) and five other Japanese companies set up a joint venture in Vietnam to build and operate a steel mill.

The plant is scheduled to be operational by May 2011 and have an estimated output of 60,000 tonnes of steel a year.

Nippon Steel Vietnam has an investment of US$15 million, with Nippon Steel contributing 51 percent and the VSC 10 percent.
