Work has started on a 104,000 tonne tanker in the Dung Quat Economic Zone (EZ), central Quang Ngai province, the largest in the country so far.

The Dung Quat 1 tanker is being built by the Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Co. Ltd. (Vinashin Dung Quat) under a US$56 million contract between the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) and the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam).

The 245m-long, 43m-wide tanker began on May 17 with construction of the main turbine with a designed capacity of 12,200KW.

The tanker is scheduled to be handed over to PetroVietnam in the third quarter of 2008.
