According to local police, the murderer is a 17-year-old pupil, who had studied at the school. Dressed in black combat gear, he opened fire on pupils and teachers at his old school in a shooting spree. Most of the victims were pupils and teachers at the school, three others were passers-by.
The murderer then hijacked a car, taking its driver hostage, and drove to the town of Wendlingen, about 40km away from the school.
Speaking to media in Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her condolences for the victims and their families and pledged to provide them with support. She described the shootings as an “appalling crime”. "It is unimaginable that in just seconds, so many pupils and teachers were killed. This is a day of mourning for the whole of Germany," she said.
After the incident, German police found 18 types of weapons hidden in the murderer’s parents’ house. However, they did not confirm whether the gun he used was among these weapons or not.
