Vietnam ranked 8th out of 10 countries hardest hit by natural disasters in 2007 with 346 people killed and a huge loss of property worth US$1.639 billion.

According to a report from the German Environment and Development Organisation (German Watch), the increasing number of natural disasters and widespread devastation were attributed to adverse climate change. Three countries most frequently hit by natural disasters are India, Bangladesh and Vietnam.

To help Vietnam overcome the consequences of natural disasters, the German government has provided around US$49,000 in emergency aid to 1,000 families affected by floods in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa. The German non-governmental organisation, Care Deutschland, provided utensils, mosquito nets and tools to help the area in December.

Earlier, the German Embassy presented US$70,000 to flood victims in Hanoi and the northern province of Ninh Binh.
