The Golden Heart Fund run by the Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper has raised an additional VND420.1 billion on the traditional New Year festival.

The sum has brought the total amount of donations that the Trade Union-run newspaper has raised for the poor to enjoy the Year of Buffalo to over VND1.53 billion.

The charitable movement has become popular across the country. Ho Chi Minh City, for example, raised more than VND38 billion for the Fund for the Poor and the Gratitude Fund in 2008.

The municipal Vietnam Fatherland Front has reported at a recent year-end review conference that the money has been used to build or repair 333 homes for poor revolutionary families and another 1,868 for the disadvantaged. The mass organisation has also provided 17,500 scholarships for poor gifted students and disbursed dozens of billions of Vietnam Dong in relief aid for natural calamity victims nationwide.
