A tropical low pressure has brought heavy rain on a large scale in the central region, causing human deaths and injuries, damaging many roads and submerging many houses.

Strong whirlwinds occurred in Huong Tra district, central Hue City on the afternoon of October 30 while teachers and pupils of Huong Phong Junior High School were studying. Roofs of five classrooms were ripped off and many teachers and pupils were injured.

Gale-force winds in coastal areas of the north of Thua Thien-Hue province strengthened into category 6. Water levels in the upper reaches of rivers rose as high as 2.03m in Kim Long and 1.72m in Phu Oc. It is forecast that the region will likely be hit by floods in the next few days.

Due to heavy rainfall on October 29-30, many roads across the province were submerged. Local people had been helped by the provincial committee for flood and storm prevention and control and the committee for search and rescue to move out of danger areas. Nearly 647 ships and boats were warned to seek shelter.

In Central Quang Nam province: Nam Tra My and Phuoc Son districts were isolated due to heavy rains. Electricity in the two districts of Bac Tra My and Nam Tra My was cut off. One person was swept away by the flood water. The provincial People’s Committee sent 45 tonnes of rice to ethnic minority pupils at boarding-schools.

Heavy rains also caused flooding in Hoi An. The upgrade of old houses in the old quarter was temporarily stopped.
