Iraq and Syria have agreed to restore full diplomatic relations after a break of a quarter of a century, announced Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari and his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Moualem after their talks in Baghdad on November 21.

An agreement to this effect was signed in Baghdad between the two FMs during the Syrian Foreign Minister’s visit to Iraq. He is the highest-ranking Syrian official to visit Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003.
Mr Zebari said the two countries agreed to cooperate on security issues and allow US forces to stay in the country until they were no longer needed.

The agreement came as US forces launched a raid on Baghdad's Shia district of Sadr City, killing three people, including a baby.
