Vietnam’s tra fish exports have recently met with a lot of difficulties after the US Department of Commerce decided to impose a new import tax based on false information about these aquatic products provided by the Catfish Farmers of America (CFA).

The CFA painted a gloomy picture of tra fish farming in Vietnam, saying they are raised in a polluted environment. It then called on the US Department of Agriculture to inspect all seafood imports from Vietnam.

To counter such proposal, Tran Cao Muu, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fisheries Association (VFA) affirmed that tra fish farming practices follow strict international requirements for food and hygiene safety including the US’ Safe Quality Food (SQF).

The VFA has recently asked the CFA and related American representatives to prevent acts of unfair competition and protectionism against Vietnamese tra and basa fish which will affect trade ties between Vietnam and the US and maintain the image of the US.
