The 4-square-kilometre limestone area in southern Kien Giang province, which is stretching along the coastal line of Ha Tien town, possesses an especially high biodiversity and rich natural resources.
The assessment was made at a recent scientific seminar on Kien Giang’s limestone area co-organised by the provicial People’s Committee and the Ho Chi Minh City Tropical Biology Institute. According to scientists, the area abounds with at least 350 varieties of flora belonging to nearly 100 families, including some freshly found such as begonia.

The area’s fauna, in addition to a rich resource of fish and shrimp, reptiles and mollusk, includes more than 300 species of water fowl.

Many of them are endangered such as white-necked and red-headed cranes. Especially, the blue-winged ibis, that was feared extinct, is also found in the area.

However, the sole limestone area in the Mekong delta is facing the danger of destruction caused by humans, particularly by then limestone exploitation for manufacturing construction materials.

Scientists also proposed to form a limestone mountain reserve in Kien Giang province to protect the environment and rich flora and fauna in this southwestern region of Vietnam./.
