A ceremony to mark Voluntary Blood Donation Day (April 7) was held in Hanoi on April 5, with the participation of over 800 Youth Union members, State employees, soldiers and Buddhists.

As many as 220 people registered to donate blood and more than 180 blood units were collected at the event, co-organised by the Hanoi Youth Union and the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT)

According to the NIHBT, an average of 30,000 blood donors each year has helped the medical sector maintain a stock of safe blood and save thousands of patients. However, blood collected from charitable blood donors could meet about 40 percent of total demand.

NIHBT Director Nguyen Anh Tri said that in 2008 it plans to get some 550,000 blood units from charitable blood donation activities launched across the country.
