More than 70 percent of the capacity of VINASAT-1 – Vietnam’s first satellite – has been leased by domestic and foreign clients since it was launched into orbit a year ago, according to the Vietnam Telecom International (VTI).

A VTU representative reported that a number of clients have signed contracts to use all 12 Ku band transponders and that the satellite will be operating at full capacity by the end of this year instead of 2010-2011 as scheduled.

According to Bui Quoc Viet, a spokesperson for the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) that owns VTI, VINASAT-1 is one of the best in the region. It is currently being leased by several domestic radio and televisions stations, the oil and gas industry and various telecom service providers.

VINASAT -1, which was launched into orbit on April 19, 2008, can transmit signals throughout Vietnam to Laos, East Asia, India and Australia. Vietnam is the 93rd country in the world and the 6th in Southeast Asia to own a satellite, and VNPT says that it is considering plans to launch a second satellite.
