The 17th known person in China to be infected with bird flu has died in China's central Hubei province, becoming the country's 12th human fatality since last November.
The victim was a 21-year-old man surnamed Lai who was employed as a migrant worker in Wuhan, capital of Hubei.
Mr Lai started showing symptoms of fever and pneumonia on April 1. He was hospitalized in Wuhan after being diagnosed with the lethal H5N1 strain earlier this week.
Local health authorities have undertaken the prescribed safety measures, placing under observation all people who have been in close contact with the patient, the authorities said, adding that none of them have so far shown any abnormal symptoms.
