On the theme of ”Cultural Heritage with Integration and Development”, the Hue Festival 2008 will open on June 3 at the Imperial Citadel Ngo Mon (Noon Gate) and finish on June 11 on the Huong (Perfume) River with a diverse range of cultural and tourist programmes.

The opening night has been well arranged to feature the various national cultural identities with the participation of number foreign art troupes which promises to give impressive performances. The combination stage performances and a firework display will bring a new feature to the multicoloured culture and arts festival. Hue royal court music, dance music and classical music will also feature very strongly the festivities.

 

The organisers said that traditional and contemporary arts troupes from Vietnam and overseas will perform during the programme of dance, music, drama and even a circus. The Vietnamese troupes will include the Hue Opera Troupe, the Thang Long Song and Dance Troupe from Hanoi, the Bong Sen Troupe from Ho Chi Minh City and the Dao Tan Classical Troupe from Binh Dinh province. In addition, there will be overseas performers from France, Belgium, Canada, Cambodia, China, India, Russia and the US. The performances will include jazz and rock music, traditional music from Thailand, Cambodia and the Republic of Korea and a contemporary circus from France.

The closing night will include artistic performances in many different places around Hue city.

 


The International Sculpture Composition Camp entitled “Hue-Vietnam Impression 2008”, which is expected to draw 30 international sculptors, will be one of the highlights of the festival.

 

The event entitled “The Legend of the Huong River” with a royal boat and 20 dragon boats will also allow visitors to bask in the legendary beauty of the Huong River. The “Journey to prolong fairy tales” event aims to make children the main characters of the festival. The Hanoi-Hue-Saigon kite festival is a colourful get-together of kites from all three regions: north, central and south and the festival’s international exhibition will attract many domestic and foreign businesses.


During the festival, visitors will have the chance to discover what it was like living in the ancient capital of Hue and take in traditional culture such as Ca Hue (classical Hue singing), Ly Hue (Hue folklore), Ho Hue (Hue chanting), Nha Nhac (royal court music) and court ballet. They can visit many famous historical relics, cultural sites and garden houses and taste delicious local dishes.


Up to now all the preparatory work, including the stages, decoration on the main streets and a lighting system along the Huong River have already been put in places. Festive atmosphere is pervading the city and its surrounding areas and every one is looking forward to the opening ceremony.

 


*** More than 500 journalists ready to cover the festival

The organising board said that by June 1, more than 500 reporters from 120 domestic and foreign press agencies have registered to cover the event.


The eight information sponsors for the event include Radio the Voice of Vietnam, Vietnam Television, Ho Chi Minh City Television Station, Culture Newspaper, Tourism Newspaper, Labour Newspaper, Youth Newspaper and Vietnamnet.
The Press Centre has been equipped with 30 Internet linked computers, printers and photocopiers.

 

*** The Hue Ancient Capital Preservation Centre has successfully restored the royal boat from the Nguyen Dynasty (Yen Nhu Boat) at a cost of VND3.5 billion. The boat can carry 120 people and the main compartment can seat 60 guests who can enjoy both delicious traditional dishes and royal court music.


Together with the royal boat, 20 other dragon boats have been built to compete in the race during the “Legend of the Huong River” festival.
