The Vietnam Rubber Industry Group (VRG) plans to raise its total rubber area to 1 million ha by 2020.

According to Tran Ngoc Thuan, VRG Deputy General Director, as many as 4,000ha of rubber plants were newly grown last year in the Central Highlands. Three more rubber companies, which were newly-established in the northwestern provinces of Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau, grew 1,000ha of rubber plants each.

The group also began growing 1,000ha in the first phase of an investment project in Laos, and plans to increase the acreage to 20,000ha. In Cambodia, the group planned to develop 100,000ha of rubber.

Last year, rubber growers got 320,000 tonnes of latex with an average yield of 1.8 tonnes per ha, and total turnover of over VND15.6 trillion.
