The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) will launch a World Book and Copyright Day at the National Library in Hanoi on April 22.

The programme will include a wide range of interesting activities such as collecting books for poor children, building Dang Thuy Tram Library, children painting pictures, meeting with renowned writers and poets, telling stories in Vietnamese and English, showcasing and selling books at preferential prices, exchanging reading experiences and talking about perception of literature.

UNESCO chose April 23 as World Book and Copyright Day at its 28th General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, as on this date in 1616, three of the world’s great writer Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died and bequeathed later generations with their masterpieces. UNESCO hopes that the day can be an occasion for all people to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors, encouraging everyone, particularly young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity.
