The Vietnamese team will join Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Japan in Group C after the Asian Football Federation (AFC)’s draw on June 13 for the final round of Asian qualifying for next year’s Beijing Olympics.

This is the first time Vietnam has come this far in the Olympic qualifying round and has been the sole representative in Southeast Asia in such a big game.

Although Vietnam and Lebanon recorded the same mark, Vietnam clinched the top spot in its second-round group A with a higher goal tally.

Iraq, which finished fourth at the 2004 Athens Olympics, will share group A with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Lebanon and Australia, while Group B includes the Republic of Korea (RoK), Bahrain, Syria and Uzbekistan.

The Olympic squad’s strong performance prompted national team coach Alfred Riedl to include 12 U23 players in his line-up for next month’s AFC Cup.

The final round of the qualifiers will run from Aug. 22 to Nov. 21, with the top team from each of the three groups heading to the Beijing Olympics 2008.
