Vietnam and India have moved closer to each other and have recorded major progress in various fields, from economics to education and science-technology, said State President Nguyen Minh Triet.

Mr Triet made the statement while receiving General Secretary of the All-India Peace and Solidarity Association (AIPSO), Pallab Sen Gupta, in Hanoi on August 12.

He recalled the mutual assistance the two countries have for decades extended to each other in their past struggle for national independence as well as in the current economic development.

“Based on the traditional relationship and high-level commitments as well as the two peoples’ efforts, Vietnam and India will make a huge leap in their strategic partnership in the interest of economic development and national construction in each country,” the State President emphasised.

In return, Pallab Sen Gupta, who is also Politburo member of the Communist Party of India (CPI), and his entourage expressed admiration for Vietnam’s great achievements in post-war national reconstruction.

They said that as emerging economies, India and Vietnam should further promote relations between mass organisations at this point as a necessary contribution to strengthening the strategic partnership as committed by leaders of the two countries.

Mr Gupta is leading an Indian delegation comprising representatives of political and mass organisations, artists, teachers, journalists, entrepreneurs and scientists on a visit to Vietnam to attend the second Vietnam-India People’s Friendship Festival, which kicked off in Hanoi on August 12.

The festival is co-organised by the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations, the Vietnam-India Friendship Association and the AIPSO.

Addressing the event, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem said the festival helps further strengthen the friendship between the Vietnamese and Indian nations which was fostered by the late President Ho Chi Minh and the late Prime Minister Nehru.

He thanked the Indian people for their consistent valuable solidarity and support to Vietnam and said the two countries’ relationship has reached a new level following the establishment of a strategic partnership formation that was announced during Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s visit to India last year.

Mr Khiem noted progress in bilateral economic ties, with two-way trade value doubling the 2007 figure to reach US$3 billion this year.

Earlier the same day, the Indian guests paid tribute to the late President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum and visited his office and residency.

They are staying in Ho Chi Minh City from August 13-14 where they will visit the War Remnants Museum and Cu Chi tunnels, meet with representatives of the business circles from India and Vietnam, and attend the 61st anniversary of Indian’s National Day.
