Vietnam has been on the right track for fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and its recent impressive achievements in poverty reduction have created a source of encouragement to us, said UN Under-Secretary General Kim Hak-su.

Vietnam is a world leader in achieving MDGs and we believe that the country has a good story and a lot of good experiences to share in this forum, said Mr Kim at the East Asia and Southeast Asia MDG Forum in Hanoi on March 1.

The two-day forum, jointly held by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the Asian Development Bank and the Ministry of Planning and Investment, brought together senior government officials, representatives of civil society and the media to assess progress towards MDGs in the region and identify key remaining challenges. The event is expected to create a forum for these countries and organisations to share experiences, discuss challenges and propose solutions and plan of actions to realise MDGs by 2015.

Vietnam is a pilot and model country in implementing the Millennium Development Goals and UN One pilot policy, said Mr Kim, adding that the annual GDP growth rate of above 7 percent in the past 10 years testified to the country’s sustainable economic development and social stability. He expressed his belief that with the impressive growth, Vietnam will have no person to earn below US$1 per day by 2015.

In his address, Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc said to Vietnam has renewed its policies and mobilised all resources for development to realise its MDGs. It has been making every effort to implement the national socio-economic development strategy in the 2001-2010 period, the Vietnam Agenda 21 Programme, the infrastructure development programme in poor areas, the education and training development programme, the healthcare development and maternal and child care and protection programmes, and the HIV/AIDS prevention and control programme.

As a result, he said, Vietnam has obtained significant achievements in hunger and poverty reduction, education development, improvements in maternal and child healthcare, prevention and control of HIV/AIDS and other dangerous epidemics, promotion of gender equality and environmental protection.

Vietnam
is strongly committed to implementing MDG declarations in the coming time by integrating the national socio-economic development plan and development plans of sectors and localities into MDGs, said Mr Phuc.

To sustain the obtained results as well as MDGs in the coming time, Mr Phuc said the country needs experience and cooperation from governments and non-governmental organisations, besides the efforts made by the government and people of Vietnam.
