State President Truong Tan Sang and Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov have underlined the need to boost economic and trade ties based on the fine development of political relations between Vietnam and Kazakhstan.

During their talks on September 11, the two leaders agreed on measures to promote bilateral economic and trade ties by supporting export-import activities, early conducting negotiations on the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Vietnam and the Customs Union of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus.

They also reached a consensus on long-term cooperation in energy, especially oil and gas exploitation and exploration in Kazakhstan, Vietnam and third countries.

After the talks, Mr Sang and Mr Massimov attended the Vietnam-Kazakhstan business forum and the debut of the Vietnam-Kazakhstan business council.

Kazakh businesses told President Sang the same day that they are pleased to cooperate with their Vietnamese partners.

They expressed hopes that more new investment projects will be signed after Mr Sang’s visit to boost bilateral cooperation in the garment and textile industry.

Mr Sang welcomed Kazakh businesses’ willingness to help Vietnamese partners businesses expand the market. He asked businesses in both countries to make greater efforts as bilateral trade remains modest at US$40 million per year on average.

After 25 years of implementing the Doi Moi (Renewal) process, Vietnam has achieved impressive growth and the country will be a reliable partner of Kazakhstan. With its experience and advantages, Vietnam can help Kazakhstan fully tap its potential, he said.

The two leaders also discussed measures to increase bilateral cooperation in priority areas such as mining, garment and textile manufacturing and farm processing.

President Sang said the Vietnamese Party and State are willing to create the best possible conditions for Kazakh businesses to operate effectively in Vietnam while encouraging Vietnamese businesses to expand cooperation with Kazakhstan in areas where they are strong.

Mr Sang highlighted the organization of the business forum as a contribution to promoting trade exchange and economic, investment and trade cooperation.

In his visit to Kazakhstan’s leading oil producer KazMunaiGaz, President Sang spoke highly of its effective cooperation with Vietnamese partners in energy and oil and gas production.

The Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PVN) and KazMunaiGaz have recently signed a joint research agreement in Usturt and are considering a number of oil and gas projects in Kazakhstan as recommended by independent partners.

Mr Sang asked Kazakhstan’s relevant agencies including KazMunaiGaz to help PVN win specific highly feasible projects, like those already underway in Kazakhstan.

He expressed his wish that KazMunaiGaz and Kazakh partners would engage in projects in Vietnam and cooperate with PVN in third countries.

Mr Sang and PM Karam Massimov witnessed the signing by PVN and KazMunaiGaz of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on negotiations for oil and gas projects in the areas where both sides are doing joint research.

During his visit to Nazarbayev university- the first one named after the first President of Kazakhstan, President Sang briefed university representatives on Vietnam’s significant achievements over the past 25 years which have helped raised the country’s international status.

He said he hopes Vietnam and Kazakhstan will continue boosting traditional cooperation in education-training and science-technology for the benefit of national industrialization and modernization.

Mr Sang thanked Kazakha leaders and people, especially teachers for assisting Vietnam to train highly qualified experts. He affirmed that Vietnamese who once studied and worked in Kazakhstan always regard this country as their second nation and a bridge to closer friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

President Sang said it requires greater efforts from the two countries’ leaders, ministries, sectors as well as young generations to develop Vietnam-Kazakhstan relations on a par with their potential and expectation.

While in Astana, he also visited the new administrative centre in the capital.

The same day, Mr Sang and his delegation left Astana for Hanoi, concluding their State visit to Kazakhstan.
