On December 9, the United Nations and Vietnam’s Government Inspectorate launched a nationwide campaign titled “ Say no to corruption” to promote International Anti-Corruption Day.

Many nations around the world including Vietnam have expressed their uncompromising attitude towards corruption. The campaign sent a message to 64 provinces and cities, saying that each individual has an important role to play in the fight against corruption.

Chief Government Inspector Tran Van Truyen said that the UN Convention against Corruption provided comprehensive, universal and fair measures to tackle corruption. The Party and State of Vietnam will do their best to perfect the current legal framework in line with the UN Convention against Corruption, said Mr Truyen.

UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam John Hendra said, “Corruption always hurts the poor the most. It diverts funds for development, undermines government capability to ensure basic services and leads to inequality and injustice.”

Chief Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vietnam Narumi Yamada said the UN is ready to help Vietnam implement the UN Convention against Corruption after it is adopted.

Officially becoming effective in 2003, the UN Convention against Corruption has served as an effective tool for combating corruption, which is a burning global issue. The approval of the Convention by 100 nations around the world indicated their strong political commitment to dealing with the problem. Vietnam has already signed but not yet ratified the convention.
