A woman and a child have died of A/H1N1 flu, bringing the country’s total fatalities to 26 out of 10,268 cases of infection, according to Nguyen Huy Nga, Director of the Preventive Medicine and the Environment Department under the Ministry of Health.

Nga was speaking on October 21 at the weekly meeting of the National Steering Committee for A/H1N1 flu pandemic prevention.

The 60-year-old woman residing in Son Dong District, Bac Giang province, suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney failure.

Mr. Nga warned that 60 percent of the patients were female, 25 percent of which were pregnant.

Meanwhile, the 20-month-old girl in Central Da Nang City suffered from coughing and high fever.

It is expected that more than 900,000 people who belong to high-risk groups will be prioritised for A/H1N1 vaccinations. If necessary, about 3.3 million selected people will be vaccinated against A/H1N1 flu prevention nationwide.

The World Health Organisation reported on October 15 that the organisation has put Vietnam on the list of nations to be provided with A/H1N1 vaccines.

According to the health ministry, from now until 2010, the WHO will supply more than 1 million vaccine doses for nearly 2 percent of Vietnam’s population.

The amount may increase but will not amount to more than 10 percent of the population. The donated vaccines are expected to be sent to Vietnam in the last quarter of this year.

The Ministry of Health has also bought between 500,000 and 1 million doses of the vaccine from WHO-recognised pharmaceutical companies.
