Khmer people enjoy New Year Festival

The southern province of Vinh Long, home to 24,000 Khmer people, is carrying out various activities to help the community enjoy the traditional Chol Chnam Thmay New Year.

On April 8, a delegation from the Southwest Steering Committee of Southwestern Region and Can Tho City visited and presented New Year gifts to monks and nuns in Can Tho City, the Khmer Theravada Buddhism Institute, and Munirensay, Pothi Somron and Sanvor temples and 15 poor households in Ninh Kieu and O Mon districts.

Offering greetings to Khmer people in the city, deputy head of the committee Nguyen Phong Quang stressed that this year, his committee and local authorities will continue to solidify policies aimed at improving the lives of Khmer people, especially the poor.

The same day, Bac Lieu province held a gathering with more than 450 Khmer Buddhist monks, retired and incumbent officials and soldiers.

Addressing the congregation, Khmer representatives expressed their gratitude to the provincial administration and Party. They stressed that they will continue implementing the Party and State’s policies and laws.

According to Vice Chairwoman of the Bac Lieu provincial People’s Committee Le Thi Ai Nam, last year, the number of poor Khmer households fell by more than 2 percent and all Khmer households got access to clean water.
