Vietnam ranked 24th of 68 countries at the 42nd International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 42) in Tokyo, Japan with two silver and two bronze medals.

Two silver medals went to Nguyen Duc Binh from Lam Son High School in Thanh Hoa province and Luu Nguyen Hong Quang from the Gift High School under the Ho Chi Minh City University of Science.

Mai Thu from Nguyen Trai High School in Hai Duong province and Le Anh Tuan from Tran Phu High School in Hai Phong City, also earned two bronze medals.

Dr. Do Quy Son, head of the Vietnamese team at IChO 42, said it was an encouraging result when all the students won prizes.

China led this year’s event with 4 golds, followed by Thailand and the Republic of Korea with 3 golds, and Japan with 2 golds.

IChO 43 will be held in Turkey in 2011 while Vietnam is scheduled to host the event in 2014.

On July 28, the team visited the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan where Ambassador Nguyen Phu Binh congratulated them on their achievements and granted them gifts.
