13 miners have been trapped underground and three others have been lifted to safety after a coal mine in northwest China's Gansu Province flooded on July 18, said local authorities.

The 16 miners were working down the shaft when the accident happened at the Jijitaizi Coal Mine in Jinta County, Jiuquan City, at 11: 30 a.m., the provincial work safety bureau said, adding that the mine is under construction.

As of 10 p.m., nearly 100 rescuers were still racing to pump water out from the flooded shaft to save the trapped workers. The owner of the coal mine is under police control.
