Retail purchases at supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City increased by 15-40 percent on the first day of 2008 compared with the same period last year.

The CoopMart chain saw a 30-40 percent boom in revenues while Vissan’s 23 retail shops enjoyed a 10-percent increase over normal trading.

The prices of essential goods such as pork, beef, aquatic products, vegetables, and drinks are expected to remain stable due to the large amount of available commodities.
