Many regions in Vietnam will face severe water shortages, especially in the dry season, as the country needs 130 billion cu.m of water in 2010, said a symposium held in Hanoi on March 22.

The symposium also warned of water sources being polluted by waste discharge from manufacturing enterprises.

Under the national water resource strategy that has been approved by the prime minister, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has devised river basin management plans to help prevent water sources from being polluted, grant waste discharging licences and collect waste discharging fees.

The ministry and its relevant ministries and departments have collaborated with Vietnam's neigbouring countries who share the common water sources.

The same day, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment organised meetings to mark World Water Day and World Meteorological Day.

As a member of the World Meteorology Organisation, Vietnam is committed to maintaining and developing its hydro-meteorological observation network, increasing exchange of data with other members of the organisation and participating in the International Polar Year 2007.

The country will continue making a national inventory of greenhouse gas emissions as well as devising and reviewing greenhouse gas emission reduction schemes to fulfill its commitments at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol.
