Hanoi festival honours the blind

(VOV) - Nearly 1,000 visually-impaired people, students and Hanoians attended the second Festival of Belief and Light at the Hanoi Children’s Palace on April 17.

The first festival of its kind was held in 2011.

This year’ festival included a wide range of humanitarian activities, demonstrating the community’s care and responsibility for the blind and disadvantaged in society, helping them to have courage and belief to overcome hardship and re-integrate into society.

Organizers honoured ten outstanding blind individuals, hosted cultural and sports exchange between Hanoian students and the blind, introduced jobs, and presented insignia for those who have supported the blind.

President of the Hanoi Blind Association Le Trung Quyet expressed his hope that the event will help raise public awareness, especially for young people, of the capacity of people with disabilities, including the blind.

He encouraged the blind and those with disabilities to try to overcome difficulties and excel in their lives, with support from society.

The Hanoi Youth Union and the Hanoi Blind Association signed a cooperative programme, aimed at promoting exchanges between students and the blind and honouring outstanding blind people who have made contributions to community development.

Hanoi now has 8,746 visually-impaired people.
