More than 3,000 tonnes of wild animals of 150-200 species are traded within Vietnam or trafficked to China and other regional countries annually, sparking fear for extinction of many species of wildlife within the country.

The alarming figure was provided by the Institute for Ecology and Biological Resources of the Vietnam National Institute of Science and Technology.

Trafficked wild animals, including some species of primates, are used to make food and medicine and even become interior decorations.

Over the past 10 years, 148 species have been added to the already-long list of endangered wildlife within Vietnam. Of the figure, at least five species have been declared totally extinct, according to the Amendment to the Red Book of Vietnam, which is scheduled to be released this year.
