The Thai House of Representatives elected Somchai Wongsawat, the single candidate of the ruling People’s Power Party (PPP), as Prime Minister at a special session on September 17.

Mr Somchai won 298 votes in favour while opposition leader Chai Chidchob of the Democratic Party gained 163 votes.

Addressing the session, Mr Somchai thanked legislators for supporting him and vowed to fulfil his tasks.

Mr Somchai will take office until he is endorsed by King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The vote came a week after former Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej was stripped of office by the Constitutional Court on September 9.
