A seminar on water treatment and storage facilities in Vietnamese households was held on October 12 in Hanoi by the National Centre for Rural Water Supply and Sanitation and PATH - a non-government health organisation from the USA.

The number of people living in rural areas who use running water has increased from 32 percent in 1998 to nearly 79 percent in 2008. However, 60 percent of Vietnam’s rural population have still not been provided with clean water, reported the National Target Program for Clean Rural Water and Environmental Sanitation.

Mora Byrkt from PATH in Vietnam, said that Vietnam has done well in rural areas, but method of treatment is different to other localities because of different water sources.

PATH is working with other specialists to analyze water resources and will use appropriate methods to treat water, said Byrkt.

The seminar concluded that Vietnam needs to build clean water management systems for everyone, particularly those living in rural areas.
