Over VND11 billion (US$687,500) will be allocated for conservation of the Saola, or Pseudoryx Nghetinhensis, one of the world’s rarest mammals, in central Thua Thien-Hue province, the Green Corridor Project announced on December 18.

Starting from June 2004, the Green Corridor Project is the World Wild Fund (WWF)’s four-year initiative with the aim of preserving the Green Corridor stretching from the Bach Ma National Park to the Phong Dien Nature Reserve.

According to the provincial Forest Protection Department, construction work will start in early 2008 in the upper reaches of the Huong River where Saola mammals had been discovered.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2015.
