The 2009 National Judo Championships will open in Thanh Hoa province’s sport competition house on August 18, according to the General Department of Sports and Physical Training.

Over 300 athletes from 25 teams nationwide will take part in the tournament. They will compete in 16 weight categories.

Ho Chi Minh City, which has the most developed judo movement in Vietnam, is expected to defend its championship title.

In addition, other teams, such as Hanoi, the Army, Ben Tre and Dong Thap are considered potential candidates for the top honour.

The tournament is an opportunity for athletes to prepare for the 25th SEA Games to be held in Laos later this year. The event will last until August 21.
