The Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) expects to add some 3,000 MW to the national power grid later this year by putting into operation or expanding a number of power plants.

EVN has invested in producing hydroelectric power in Central Highland and northern mountainous provinces such as Buon Kuop, Pleikrong and Tuyen Quang.

It is tapping coalmines in the northern province of Quang Ninh to expand the Uong Bi thermal power plant and build a new one in neighbouring Hai Phong city. It is going to finish the construction of a gas-fired thermal electricity plant in Omon district, of Can Tho province in the Mekong Delta.

In addition, 10 other power projects built by other investors are in the final stage of construction. Most of them are mostly thermal power, such as Son Dong and Cam Pha plants in Quang Ninh province and Ca Mau 2 plant in the southernmost province of Ca Mau.

EVN is working on 40 electricity generation projects, of which 28 are under construction and 12 others are in the preparatory stage.

The group is making an effort to connect the new power generation sources with customers in Hanoi’s outlying district of Soc Son and the northern mountainous provinces of Bac Can and Thai Nguyen.
