A RoK-funded project to provide safe water and sanitation to U Minh region in the Mekong delta province of Kien Giang began on March 6.

Present at the ceremony were representatives from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the provincial People’s Committee.

This is part of a US$2.4 million project using non-refundable aid from the RoK government. The three-year project was launched in 2007 with the aim of providing safe water for more than 20,000 people in U Minh and Vinh Binh Nam regions.

The water supply system in U Minh region is designed to provide 2,400 cu.m of water per day. Meanwhile, a system with a capacity of 700 cu.m of water per day will be built in Vinh Binh Nam region this year.

KOICA considers safe water supply as a top priority area in its development assistance to the Vietnamese Government. The U Minh and Vinh Binh Nam project will serve as a model for similar aid projects in other localities in the country.
