Like football fans across the world, many Vietnamese fans are spending sleepless nights watching exciting matches of the 2006 World Cup on television. Meanwhile businesses launched sale promotion campaigns to capitalise on the one-month long tourney.

Businesses in HCM City did not miss chances to capitalise on the global football tourney, which takes place every four years by launching sale promotion campaign en mass. At least 5,000 TV sets have been sold since early this month. Many families, who could not afford a brand new TV, bought a second hand one, costing around VND600,000 each.

Meanwhile, many university hostels in Hanoi are organising free World Cup programmes for students, who watch football matches through 300-inch screens erected at the conference hall. The students also participate in match result predicting and commentary contests and enjoy music performances during the interval of the match.

All the newspapers spend at least one page writing stories and comments on the 2006 World Cup in Germany. At least 10 newspapers such as Lao Dong (Labour), The Thao Vietnam (Vietnam Sports), Binh Duong newspapers and the Vietnam News Agency publish daily special supplements on the tournament.

Foreigners, who run business in Hanoi, also did not miss this golden chance. Ben Leaver and Alicia Williams, who run Jafa pub, said that the pub will open till the last match of the day during the one-month tournament. In addition, fans will enjoy free beer from 22.00-23.00 every day. Ben said he collected the national flags of the 32 participating teams and arranged them in eight groups corresponding to the eight groups of the World Cup. When a team is eliminated, the flag of that country will be removed from the group.

At Jaspas restaurant on the fourth floor of Hanoi Tower, Peter Holdsworth, the restaurant owner, designed a miniature stadium, which has goal frames and grass field. The restaurant offers free drawing service if any customers like to have a small flag of their favourite teams painted on their foreheads or cheeks. During the interval of the match, five lucky customers will participate in a shooting series to get awards.

Peter also decorated his restaurant with shirts of the 32 participating teams and customers will be offered discount cards if they buy German shirts.
