An agreement on a gender equality project was signed in Hanoi on January 18 by the Vietnam Women’s Union and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI).

The project aims to enhance women’s rights, reinforce national policies on gender equality and improve opportunities for women in economic activities. It also aims to prevent women trafficking, prostitution and violence against women.

The programme will be implemented in Hanoi, central Thanh Hoa province, and HCM City from 2007 to 2010 at an estimated cost of €3.76 million, of which €3 million is sourced from AECI.

Vietnam now ranks 80th in the world’s gender-related development index (GDI) and the country’s parliament has the highest proportion of women in the Asia-Pacific region.
