Vietnam will send around 1,000 students to do doctorates in the UK in the 2008-2020 period and 100 are expected to complete their work in 2008-2009.

This is part of a memorandum of understanding on Ph.D training co-operation signed on October 15 between the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training and seven universities in the UK, including Nottingham, Warwick, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Southampton and UCL of the London University.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thien Nhan led a delegation on a working visit to the UK on October 15-16 at the invitation of the Department for Innovation, University and Skills.

Mr Nhan said to improve the quality of university education and lecturers, Vietnam plans to have around 20,000 Doctors, half of them will be trained overseas.
