France and the United States are working on modifying the wording of their draft resolution to end the Middle East crisis.

US Assistant Secretary of State David Welch held talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora, but no details of the meeting have been released.

An Arab League delegation arrived in New York to urge the UN Security Council to change the wording. Arab League chief Amr Mussa, Qatar’s Foreign Minister Sheiikh Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani, and the United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan argued that a resolution should call for an immediate Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

Lebanon
earlier rejected the draft resolution as it does not call for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from its territory. It added that it will deploy 15,000 troops in the south as soon as the Israeli forces pull out.

Meanwhile, the Israeli cabinet is discussing an army plan to push deeper into Lebanon and take control of areas used by Hezbollah to fire rockets. It is believed that this will involve deploying an additional 30,000 troops, up to the Litani River and possibly beyond.

Along the Israel-Lebanon border in the early hours of Wednesday morning, a dramatic Israeli troop deployment began. Countless Israeli tanks headed across the border into Lebanon as machine gun fire rattled the night. Heavy barrages of artillery, including rocket-propelled grenades and tank shells, fired from multiple Israeli locations.

At least 994 people in Lebanon and 101 Israelis have been killed in four weeks of bloodshed sparked when Hezbollah seized two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid on July 12.
