PM Dung: more international effort needed to achieve MDGs

The United Nations and member countries, especially G20 countries, should make a greater effort to maintain the stability of the economic environment, prevent economic crisis, and achieve the MDGs, said Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

PM Dung made the statement at the Millennial Development Goals (MDGs) forum in Seoul on November on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, which was attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon; Spanish President of the Government Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero; South Africa's President Jacob Zuma; Speaker of the Republic of Korea’s (RoK) National Assembly, Park Hee-tae; and more than 100 members of the RoK National Assembly.

Mr. Dung said Vietnam has achieved many of the MDGs and attributed its success to Vietnam’s integration of MDGs into its development strategies and policies at all levels and the assistance of the international community.

At the forums, PM Dung and other leaders praised the UN’s role in promoting experience exchange to work out measures to complete MDGs and helping countries build development policies and strategies.

They also highlighted the significance of the G20 Summit, the first held in an Asian country, and spoke highly the development of the RoK, which has changed from an aid receiving country to an aid provider.

Participants praised the integration of development issues into the agenda of the Summit and said it expressed the G20’s political determination to fulfill its commitments.

They called on developed countries, non-governmental organisations, and the business community to provide more assistance for developing countries to achieve the MDGs.
