A conference was held in Hanoi on March 3 to review the past five years of implementing flood and storm prevention and rescue work.

Speaking at the conference, head of the National Steering Committee on Flood and Storm Prevention and Control Le Huy Ngo said although the 2001-2005 period saw a high frequency of natural disasters, the State and people made great efforts in mitigating losses in terms of property, houses, crops and human lives.

The Government also provided VND1,580 billion to localities to overcome landslides along the river banks and the coast and an additional sum of VND175 billion to upgrading dykes.
However, it is necessary to overcome some shortcomings in the future, Mr Ngo said.
