Deputy PM greets Nepalese Buddhist lineage head

(VOV) - Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on April 8 received his Holiness the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa, Djigme Padma Aungchen who is the twelfth and present incarnation of the Drukpa lineage of Nepal.

Phuc said the Vietnam Buddhist Shangha (VBS) - the only Buddhism organization in Vietnam - represents all Buddhist monks and nuns from throughout the country.

Under the Vietnamese Buddhism Dharma, Buddhist clergies and followers are required to abide by State law, reinforce great national unity, intensify charitable activities to make significant contributions to national construction and development, Phuc said.

He also highlighted the Vietnamese Buddhism’s cooperation with regional and international Buddhist organizations, adding that the Vietnamese Government has allowed the VBS to host the United Nations Day of Vesak (Buddha’s Birthday, Enlightenment and Passing Away) celebrations, slated for May in northern Ninh Binh province.

This shows Vietnam’s policy of respecting and ensuring the right to belief and religious freedom so as to bring into full play cultural values and religious ethics in society.

For his part, Aungchen expressed his delight at the Vietnamese Buddhism’s development as well as its contributions to national development.

He used this occasion to convey his condolences over the death of Most Venerable Thich Tri Tinh in late March.

Gyalwang Drukpa is the honorific title of the head of the Drukpa School, one of the independent Sarma (new) Schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
