A meeting was held in Hanoi on April 27 to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of Southern Liberation Day (April 30) and the 121st anniversary of International Labour Day (May 1). The meeting aimed to encourage cadres, workers and people to study and follow the moral example of late President Ho Chi Minh.

The meeting was attended by Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, former Party General Secretary Do Muoi, former National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Van An, President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Pham The Duyet, Chairman of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour Dang Ngoc Tung, representatives from various ministries, sectors and heroic mothers.

Addressing the meeting, Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Municipal Party Committee and Chairman of the Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Quoc Trieu said, “We take great pride in the great national victory and revolutionary achievements recorded by the Party and people during the past 80 years. In commemoration of late President Ho Chi Minh, revolutionary veterans and soldiers who laid down their life for the nation, Party members, cadres, workers and city people should study and follow late President Ho Chi Minh’s moral example which embodies Vietnam’s quintessential cultural and moral identity.”

Mr Trieu highlighted Hanoi’s remarkable achievements in the first quarter of this year, saying GDP increased by 10.6 percent, while export rose by 21.2 percent, hitting a record high in the past five years. Social investment capital reached VND7,240 billion (up 14 percent), including US$270 million from foreign investors.

Key projects were well in place. Hanoi led the country in implementing the one-stop-door policy, especially in simplifying business procedures and dealing with violations.

Speaking at the meeting, Chairman
of the Hanoi Federation of Labour Nguyen Tien Dinh said after 20 years implementing the outstanding working movement (1984-2004), the city had 283,000 people receiving the title of “good labourer”. Workers introduced 127,000 initiatives, earning VND302 billion. About 10,000 initiatives were applied effectively in terms of economic and high-technological value. The movements aimed at strengthening solidarity, protecting the environment and building a new cultural lifestyle in the past five years have received an active response from all sections of the Hanoi population.

In preparation for the celebration of the 1,000th Thang Long-Hanoi anniversary and the successful implementation of socio-economic development targets for 2007, the municipal authorities have assigned tasks aimed at boosting the current movement “Studying and following late President Ho Chi Minh’s moral example”, and other activities aimed at promoting business operation and increasing productivity and quality.
